For most people Google is the only search engine worth using. And, for many web marketers it’s the only search engine worth optimizing for. At about 65-70% of the market share, who can blame theme? Google tends to give people the results they want, and has been attempting to weed out content farms and other types of sites that optimized on Google’s previous algorithms. But recent Panda updates have destroyed traffic to many sites, cementing the reality that Google can make or break businesses. So what other search engines are out there? And, are they worth looking at?

Bing is rated second to Google, but with only about 15% of the market. Funny enough, Microsoft has been caught using Google’s search results in their own results, an embarrassing revelation that may have people shying away from using the product.

There is, of course, search/portal veteran Yahoo! who has recently integrated Bing results into some of its search results. Yahoo!’s market share has been slightly declining by the month, and currently averaging around 5% of the market.

If you want to try something fun, use one of the newer search engines and see what results you get. Blekko (http://blekko.com/) is one company you might want to check out. They use a method called “slashtags” that filter results to specific sites or content. And, their search engine attempts to rid results of content farm links.

Another interesting search engine is called DuckDuckGo (http://duckduckgo.com/). DuckDuckGo attempts to omit “useless sites with just ads” in their search results. They also provide “zero click” answers in a red box above all the results, which might save you time in searching through results listings. And, they have a great looking duck for a logo!

Late in June, Google launched Google+, a service focused on the social/sharing aspect of the web and an attempt to grab some of Facebook’s market which currently claims over 750 million users. Google+ launched by invitation only to a limited audience, but within 4 weeks the service acquired 25 million users, a far cry from Facebook’s numbers but certainly impressive considering its immaturity. So why have website administrators rushed to add the Google+ icon to their pages?

Google is quite simply the most important search engine for most websites. And although traditionally Google results were driven by content (data) and how other sites rate that data, sharing may end up being a big part of how they rank and sort websites. In other words, website administrators, or anyone outside the Google circle for that matter, don’t know how Google+ will affect page rank and so adding the button is more or less insurance.

One of the coolest things about Google+ (also referred to as “Google Plus” and “G+”) is the “Circles” feature. Circles allow you to organize your contacts into different categories such as friends, business, family, etc. and so anything private will be only accessible by those you let into the circle. “Hangouts” is another G+ feature that enables group video chat, but the groups are currently limited to 10 people. There are several other features in Google+ you might want to check out.

For now, Google+ is in “limited Field Trial” and so the Google Plus home page is only accessible by some. For now, you might want to get Google+ button added to your page with the hopes the more “likes” you have the more traffic to your site.

Here’s a link to adding the +1 button, and here’s a link to the various +1 buttons sizes you can make use of.

The launch of video chat. After working with Skype for several months, Facebook has added a video calling feature. You might not have the update yet, but the video call button will appear at the top of your chat window.

Great for your business? Why not? Lots of times in business it’s great to put a face on a phone number. The video calling will also be available in 70 different languages, making it available worldwide.

Facebook also added “Group Chat” to their list of features. This allows you to quickly gather a group to discuss a topic, plans for the evening, or business ideas. Just another reason to incorporate your business into your Facebook profile.

The social network improved their messages feature last November by bringing together chat, texting, emails and messages.

Have you ever noticed your friend is emailing you “Pharmacy Deals” or “Weight Loss Secrets?” Chances are, the email server or account they use was hacked into, allowing spammers to reach all contacts the person may be associated with. The spam emails will keep coming until the person changes all their information and passwords or closes the account. It’s an annoyance we will have to live with, even though Bill Gates predicted several years ago that the spam problem would be solved by now.The first thing you should do is change all the passwords to all your important website accounts. More importantly, change any passwords that may be easy to crack. For example, the password “friendly” is just too easy. If you are going to use a common word, add numbers and odd characters to the word to make it more difficult. For example, “45friendly@65″. An even better solution is to mix upper and lowercase letters, and change letters to numbers that sound like them. For example, “4riendLY@65x”.

The best solution, though, is to create a completely random password. For example, “ph#Ac48Ru”. Sure these are harder to remember, but these will be the most secure for your website and website accounts. You can use a tool to randomly generate a password such as PC Tools Password Generator. Just make sure you make a copy and write it down somewhere where no-one will find it.

If you haven’t optimized your business on the web you may be missing out on many opportunities.

If you have a physical business location, you’ll want to hit as many business directories as you can starting with Google Places. In Google Places, you can create a profile of your business including services, location, phone number, and website address. You may find that your business will outrank a competitor who does not a have local business profiles in Google search results. Wouldn’t that be nice?

But don’t stop there! You’ll also want to make sure Yahoo! Local has your business listed, as well as Bing Local. “The Big 3″ web search engines are absolutely essential if you want to stay ahead of the pack. Yahoo! also has a Directory Submit that will get your site reviewed quickly and listed in their directory. If you can find room in your budget, the yearly fee of $299 may be well worth it.

There are many more local search websites to consider when optimizing for local search. Yelp provides reviews of local businesses by users, as well as search and social networking tools. With 31 million unique visitors a month as of early 2010, Yelp is hard to ignore.

Foursquare is another user-contributed service where local business patrons can “Check-In” to businesses via mobile devices and build “Mayor” status by frequenting the most locations. As of October, 2010 the site had 4 million registered users.

Too much to do and no time on your hands? Land Interactive can help you get your business optimized for local search at an affordable price. Contact us for a free quote.

The new gTLD (Generic Top-Level Domains) program may change the way you go to a website – therefore devaluing the .com extension. This means companies, individuals, or whoever will be able to create and purchase their own extensions. An example would be Apple registering the .apple extension. This would enable them to create addresses such as ipad.apple, itouch.apple, etc. (Notice the missing .com extension.)

According to the ICANN website, “The expansion of the generic top-level domain (gTLD) space will allow for a greater degree of innovation and choice.”

Opening up the top-level domain space could potentially create a new marketplace, and change the way we visit websites. However, registration fees are extremely expensive. ICANN documentation prices the application fee alone at $185k with a yearly cost of $25k to operate. The high prices will certainly deter domain squatters from grabbing your branded .com, but will also prevent many businesses from partaking in the new domain protocols.

Recently, the use of “www” has been de-emphasized, partially in response to a 2010 Wired article proposing “The Web is Dead” (not the internet) but no doubt fueled by the ease of typing in http://landinteractive.com rather than the traditional “www” that has worn down our “w” key over the years.

If you’ve been hesitant to start a Twitter page for any reason, don’t wait any longer. Get on it! Twitter, which was founded in 2006, has quickly risen to be the second most popular Website (Website Magazine Oct. 2010), just behind Facebook and just one step ahead of LinkedIn. You can open a Twitter account as either an individual or business (a process that is much easier than Facebook) and start tweeting in a matter of seconds.

Choosing a username.

When choosing a username try to pick a name without an underscore (ex. land_interactive) or number (ex. landinteractive2010) that is easy to remember. Studies done by Web research firm HubSpot have shown that usernames without underscores or numbers lead to more followers. Hence, you would want a username like “landinteractive” or “landinte” to simplify.

Tweeting

Tweets are short, concise, and usually timely messages that can communicate something, or direct a viewer/user to a webpage. Tweets must be shorter than 140 characters, so be creative. If linking to a webpage, use a URL shortener like tinyurl.com to fit into your tweet.

Twitter experts have said not to go overboard with tweeting. Rather, spread them out over time and get others to retweet your tweets if you can. Having a frequently updated Twitter page will surely increase awareness of your brand.

The Internet though, is going no-where. So what is the difference between the Web and the Internet?

The Internet has been around for decades. However, the Web emerged as HTML and web browsers starting taking the place of PC applications. Even today, HTML5 has been touted as the next web, when all applications would exist in the cloud.

But as Wired predicts, the Web is being taken place by apps which get you what you want immediately rather than having to search through the web. Apps are more specific, save time, and simplify your connected experience.

As Wired puts it, “the center of interactive media — increasingly, the center of gravity of all media — is moving to a post-HTML environment.”

The first, of course, is content. If you don’t have good content other sites won’t link to you. If you do have good content, maximize its potential by finding out where the content would be useful. For example, if you wrote a great article about how to trim fruit trees, you could find a discussion forum about farming or gardening and post a link to your article.

You can also research other sites such as ask.com or free article directories where your expertise could be utilized. Write an article, and have your website in your profile. “How to” videos are also very popular and could be uploaded to YouTube to get some link juice back to your site.

An older method of gaining links back to your site is to request link exchanges with similar sites. If you have a Website, you may have already been bombarded by spammers looking to do link exchanges. Research other sites in your industry and cherry pick those sites you intend to contact.
