Update on using meta keywords

April 7th, 2010 by admin

meta-keywords-ssUse of meta keywords for Google traffic died out somewhere in the late nineties when Google realized meta keywords were at times only being used by webmasters to get hits, with no regard for relevant content. The tactic is no longer useful for Google results. The company has stated they no longer look at meta keywords to determine a web page’s content. Google uses its own method of determining what a page is about, and may even ignore the meta description and instead create its own description. Read the rest of this entry »

Is DMOZ a waste of optimization time?

February 7th, 2010 by admin

dmoz-deadRecent talk about DMOZ (The Open Directory Project) being a waste of time has been emerging on the web. It was once standard for search engine optimization and web marketing experts to submit sites to DMOZ.org to increase Google page rank. DMOZ was at one time a backup Google website directory because of its manually edited listings. However, while many optimizers have found their sites listed quickly on DMOZ many others have tried multiple times with no luck. Our experience here as been less than positive. Out of 10 sites submitted we are lucky to get one listed. Read the rest of this entry »

Black text is so out…

April 11th, 2009 by admin

Have you noticed black text isn’t used as much anymore on websites? Sure it is still used as a background color and is one of the strongest branding colors you can use. But black for your body copy? That’s so last decade.

Many sites are using variations of greys these days. The basic web palette provides a few grey options that provide enough contrast from each other to really make your text stand out. Try the hexidecimal numbers #333333 (really dark grey), #666666 (sort of dark grey), or #999999 (medium grey) instead of black. Also try #CCCCCC as a highlight color.

There are many more grey variations that fall between the web-safe pallete and use a number/letter combination. For example #b6b6b6 is a really nice grey that is slightly darker than #CCCCCC. #8d8d8d is slightly darker than #666666. CSS Tip* – Did you know if the hexidecimal number is made up of the same set of number you can just use the first three? So, for #333333 you can just use #333. And, if the hexidecimal is a repeated pattern you can just use the first two combination. So, if you have #8d8d8d you can just use #8d and CSS will know what to do. Try it out!
